Jennifer Wallace’s new novel is set in the crowded streets which once
circled in and around the Barbican before they were obliterated by the
London blitz during the Second World War. The characters in her novel dig up the body of the famous poet Milton, who was buried in the old St Giles’ Church, Cripplegate and start selling the remains of the corpse as souvenirs. Writing the novel involved Wallace in the creative process of reconstituting a sense of place just as her heroine tries to keep track of Milton’s bones.
Come and hear about this intriguing act of literary necromancy as we
re-imagine ourselves back into the bawdy, boistrous life of the East End
London streets.
